Mercian League Rd3 Report

For the 2nd Mercian League gala in a row I am left wondering ’what if?’ as once again our own mistakes, through 4 DQs cost us a 5th place finish (2 of those DQs came in races we would have won). For a club that is usually so good at galas in regards to doing the basics right (starts and take overs) it was disappointing to find out all 4 DQs came via faulty starts and take overs. But I am sure you will all work harder to make sure you get it right in the future. We all learn from our mistakes.

Never the less, despite a disappointing positional finish in the gala, there were as always some excellent performances in both the individuals and relays. In particular I was personally impressed with Sophie Hotchkiss, who knocked 2 seconds off her 25m fly time, Jess Banner who knocked off 10 seconds off her 100m breast time (that she only set in February at Counties) and Ollie Whittingham who also knocked 10 seconds of his 100m breast from the last time he did it. I also thought the 12/u girls relays stood out as being very good as well. Well done all.

I will also take this opportunity to thank Kynan Wong and family for coming to the gala after competing at Gloucester at all day (and doing some close pb times still!!) and to Amber Fowkes and Carly Pinnock who had to cover a no show in the Open girls races. Thank you.

Individual wins at the gala went to: Ava Kumar (50 Brst), Jess Banner (100 Brst) and Christian Barcz (100 Bk) and a relay win went to the 12/u girls Medley Relay..

Thank you to all the helpers on poolside and well done to all swimmers that took part!!
