Just four days into 2014 Etwall Masters were back in action at the Shrewsbury Masters New Year Gala. The traditional curtain raiser to the new season saw 139 swimmers competing with the Eagles having a squad of 9 on duty. This meet is always challenging so soon after the Christmas break, even more so this year with it occurring before the clubs first training session back after the holidays.
Undeterred the squad recorded some decent swims throughout the day with Dave Holland leading way with victory in the 30-34yrs age group. Helen Rollé took third place in the 35-39 age group, whilst Captain Janet Briggs did the same in the 55-59 band. Chris Rollé was left to rue his inability to comply with the new Breaststroke rules as he chalked up the first DQ of the year. On a positive note he did take third place in the overall 40-44 age group standings.
Completing the Etwall line-up was: Martyn Finney, Paul Ingle, Lisa Stansbie, Garry Vickers and Richard Woodall. Both the Men’s 160 years Medley relay and Men’s 200 years Freestyle relay teams came away with comprehensive victories and maximum points, which left Etwall in a highly creditable 4th place in the top visiting team award.
